Establishing an In-house Response to Trauma

Some organisations prefer to use in-house resources to deal with the immediate after effects of an incident. We offer courses to increase the competence of those individuals who may be required to respond to an incident. Two models of intervention are available:

  • A use of basic counselling skills plus post-trauma support skills
  • De-briefing as a way of providing staff support
  • Basic Counselling Skills

This two day "Introduction To Counselling" workshop develops the basic skills needed to support employees experiencing emotional problems at work. The skills can be used beneficially in dealing with people on a day to day basis. In-house response is underpinned by using Crisis Management Response Ltd counsellors for referral or in situations beyond the capability of the in-house team.

    Benefits
By the end of this workshop delegates will be able to:

  • Develop a simple model for counselling at work
  • Apply the techniques of "active listening". Use basic counselling skills within an organisational setting and manage the issues of confidentiality
  • The two day introductory course may be extended by a one day "Post-Trauma Support Skills" workshop to understand and support individuals who have been involved in a sudden traumatic event at work such as an armed raid, industrial accident, violence, aftermath of a bomb etc.

By the end of this additional day's training delegates will be able to:

  • Recognise common post-trauma reactions and their effects
  • Develop and apply a programme of care to support affected employees
  • Recognise when to refer an individual for specialist support
  • Debriefing Skills

Critical Incident Debriefing was developed to provide support for emergency teams working in the aftermath of a major incident. Its use has been extended to assist the victims of a wide variety of more traditional incidents. The technique mobilises the coping mechanisms of all individuals within the group exposed to the incident. The debriefing is carried out in a structured manner and the technique can be learned by suitable volunteers to provide, for example, peer group support after an incident.

Two levels of debriefing courses are offered:

    "Critical Incident Debriefing"

This three-day course equips suitable individuals to lead debriefing sessions for their peer groups.

    Benefits
By the end of this workshop delegates will have:

  • Increased their knowledge of the problems affecting staff involved in a traumatic incident
  • Developed a model of debriefing and a toolkit of debriefing skills appropriate for the needs of the organisation
  • Applied and practiced the debriefing skills
  • "Enhanced Debriefing Skills"

A four-day course aimed at Human Resource Personnel who may have to support the individuals carrying out group debriefing.

    Benefits
By the end of this workshop delegates will have:

  • Increased their basic counselling skills
  • Developed enhanced listening, questioning and confronting skills
  • Evolved a model for "debriefing the debriefers"
